Turkana Basin Institute
The Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) is a renowned research center located in northern Kenya, dedicated to the study of human prehistory, paleontology, and the natural history of the Turkana Basin. Established by Dr. Richard Leakey, TBI plays a pivotal role in uncovering groundbreaking discoveries about early human evolution and the ancient ecosystems of the region. Visitors to the institute can explore its fascinating research, engage with scientists, and gain insights into the rich cultural and geological heritage of this extraordinary landscape.
ITINERARY
Day1

Sarara - Koros Camp
Your 2hrs journey commences in Sarara where your Helicopter pick you from Sarara Lodge at 07.15 carrying a picnic breakfast.
Fly across to the southern side of the Mathews Mountains and then over the northen end of the Karisia hills cutting down into the Suguta Valley.
From here you will slowly make your way up the Suguta stopping numerous times along the way to explore areas of interest such as the painted and hoodoe valleys, the fresh water pools, the sand dunes and Lake Logipe before cutting east towards Koros Camp.
Arrive in time to settle in to the lodge, have lunch and some time to relax. 3hrs flying.
The afternoon will be spent driving to and exploring the Jade sea.
Lake Turkana, also known as "The Jade Sea" for its striking hues of blue and green, is the world's largest permanent desert and alkaline lake, stretching 290 km and fed by the Omo River from Ethiopia. It's also the fourth-largest salt lake globally by volume. Renowned as the "cradle of humankind" due to numerous hominid fossils, Lake Turkana is a must-see destination located about 50 km from the camp.
Day 2

TBI & Koros Camp
Depart after breakfast flying across to the western side of the lake heading north.
Stop at Lothagum, an ancient lake bed with fascinating fossils to be discovered.
Cross back over at Fergusons Gulf, a turkana fishing village and overfly Central island, a UNESCO world heritage site and spectacular from the air.
Continue on to Turkana Basin Institute where you will spend the morning exploring fossils alongside Louise Leakey or one of the senior researchers before heading out to one of the live digging sites.
From here follow the eastern shoreline back to Koros Camp. 4.5 hours flying.
Day 3

Mpala Research Center
After breakfast, your private charter will pick you up and transfer you to Mpala Research Center in Laikipia. This is a 2hrs 15mins transfer. From here, it's a 20 minutes transfer to the Center.
You will be based here for the next one and half days.
Mpala Research Centre hosts the REDI-NET Silver Laboratory, dedicated to field surveillance and testing to better understand pathogens found in Kenya’s tropical grasslands. As a guest, you will have the opportunity to meet with the Silver Lab team and gain insight into their critical research.
Mpala’s One Health veterinary fellowship brings together local and international vets to exchange knowledge and participate in wildlife interventions. Current projects include collaring and a rhino reproductive hormone study at Ol Jogi Conservancy, aimed at supporting eastern black rhino conservation.
In addition, the Turkana Evolution Project, led by Dr. Julien Ayroles of Princeton University, studies how the Turkana people have adapted to extreme desert environments and how transitioning to urban settings impacts their genetic and physical traits. This research explores genetic variation, phenotypic traits, and the broader implications for understanding health and disease.
Day 4

Nairobi, The Norfolk hotel
In the late afternoon, bid farewell to Mpala and take your scheduled 1-hour flight to Nairobi. Upon arrival, your concierge will transfer you to The Norfolk Hotel, a historic landmark and one of Nairobi's most renowned establishments.
Since opening in 1904, The Norfolk has been a hub for travelers, business professionals, and safari adventurers. The hotel features a blend of classic architecture and modern wings, all centered around a charming grassy courtyard adorned with vintage oxcarts and carriages.
Upon arrival, a liveried doorman will welcome you, leading you through the iconic Lord Delamere Terrace Bar to the elegant reception area.
The Norfolk is celebrated for its exceptional cuisine, with the Ibis Grill offering exquisite à la carte meals and the Lord Delamere Restaurant serving delicious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.
