Kenya & ZANZIBAR '26

Across Rift and Ocean

Beginning in the vibrant heart of Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital, we will set out on a journey that spans history, culture, and wild places. From here, we travel north to the Turkana Basin Institute, where scientists are uncovering the origins of humankind along the shores of an ancient lake. Continuing south, we enter the Maasai Mara, an iconic landscape of sweeping savannahs and extraordinary wildlife, where lions, elephants, and wildebeest roam under vast skies. Finally, we cross to the coast and wander the winding alleys of Stone Town, Zanzibar’s storied port city, rich with spice-laden history and Swahili culture. This odyssey offers a rare glimpse into Kenya and Tanzania’s most captivating landscapes and the people and wildlife that bring them to life.

Stone Town- Zanzibar

On the edge of the Indian Ocean lies Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar, where centuries of trade and culture weave through narrow, winding alleys. Here we will wander past carved wooden doors and spice-laden markets, hear the call to prayer mingling with the sound of the sea, and discover a place shaped by Arab, Persian, African, and European influences. This storied port city invites you to step back in time—into a world of dhows and sultans, vibrant craft and music, and a living heritage that has made Stone Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every corner hums with history, every turn reveals something new.

Maasai Mara

Sweeping grasslands, acacia-dotted horizons, and skies alive with birds, this is the Maasai Mara, one of Africa’s most iconic wildernesses. Here we will witness nature at its most raw and spectacular: lions stalking the plains, elephants moving in silent procession, and, in season, the great herds of wildebeest and zebra surging across the Mara River. Alongside this extraordinary wildlife lives the Maasai community, whose traditions and guardianship of the land run deep. Time in the Mara is time immersed in the rhythm of the wild, where every sunrise brings the promise of new stories unfolding on the endless savannah.

Turkana Basin Institute

Deep in Kenya’s northern frontier lies the Turkana Basin Institute, a place where ancient landscapes hold secrets that shaped our species. Here, along the shores of a vast desert lake, we will walk in the footsteps of pioneering scientists uncovering fossils and artifacts that tell the story of human evolution. We will explore dig sites and laboratories, meet researchers pushing the boundaries of knowledge, and experience the stark beauty of a region where geology, wildlife, and culture converge. A journey to TBI is a journey back through time—into the very origins of who we are
