Migration, Chimpanzees, and the Tree Climbing Lions of Manyara

From Serengeti to L. Manyara

Beginning amid the golden plains of the Serengeti, you will witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles—the wildebeest migration—where thundering herds cross rivers and predators lie in wait beneath vast African skies. From the Serengeti, our journey takes us west to the forested haven of Rubondo Island, a secluded sanctuary on Lake Victoria, where we trek through lush greenery in search of wild chimpanzees and encounter an untouched world of birds and hidden wildlife. Finally, we trace the journey eastward to Little Chem Chem, on the wildlife-rich plains that bridge Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Here, ancient baobabs stand sentinel over acacia-dotted savannahs, elephants wander freely between lake and park, and the stillness of the bush invites quiet encounters with nature at its most elemental. This final chapter brings together the drama of the wild, the intimacy of close encounters, and the timeless beauty of northern Tanzania’s great landscapes.

Manyara Region

In the heart of northern Tanzania lies Little Chem Chem, a secluded wilderness where acacia woodlands, palm-fringed plains, and the shores of Lake Manyara meet. This landscape hums with quiet life — elephants moving through the trees, giraffes stepping lightly among the thickets, and the distant call of lions rolling through the dusk. Here, forest and savannah merge in a sanctuary of timeless rhythms, where ancient baobabs stand watch over the great migration routes linking Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Little Chem Chem invites you into a gentler kind of wild — intimate, soulful, and deeply connected to the pulse of nature.

Serengeti Lamai

In the far northern reaches of the Serengeti lies Lamai, a rugged, golden landscape where kopjes rise like ancient sentinels above the plains and the Mara River carves its winding path. This is a front‑row seat to the drama of the Great Migration, as countless wildebeest and zebra surge across crocodile‑lined waters in their timeless quest for greener pastures. Amidst the granite outcrops and sweeping grasslands, lions lounge in the shade, elephants move in quiet procession, and leopards slip like shadows through the rocks. Lamai is a place where the Serengeti feels raw and untamed—a wilderness alive with movement, mystery, and the heartbeat of Africa itself.

Rubondo Island

Set like an emerald jewel in the vast waters of Lake Victoria, Rubondo Island is a sanctuary where forest meets shoreline and wildlife thrives undisturbed. Here, dense canopies shelter elusive chimpanzees, whose presence you’ll feel in rustling leaves and distant calls long before you glimpse them. Trekking through Rubondo’s tangled trails brings encounters with rare birds, shy sitatungas, and the serene beauty of towering fig trees draped in lianas. Far from the bustle of the mainland, the island offers a sense of discovery and solitude—a hidden world where nature reigns and every step feels like an unfolding secret.

08.04 & 05

Ubuntu Serengeti Lamai

In the far northern reaches of the Serengeti, the Lamai Wedge offers a front‑row seat to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. Here, between July and October, the vast herds of the Great Migration gather, driven by ancient instinct and the promise of greener pastures.

From your camp, you’ll venture out each day to witness the drama unfold: endless lines of wildebeest and zebra flowing across golden plains, their hooves drumming the earth like distant thunder. Along the Mara River’s winding bends, the tension builds as herds mass on the banks, testing the waters before plunging in—some making it across, others falling prey to crocodiles lying in wait.

It is a raw, breathtaking experience where every moment is alive with possibility: lions watching from the grass, cheetahs pacing the open flats, elephants moving calmly through the chaos. In Lamai, the migration is not just a sight to behold—it is a feeling, a pulse of life that connects you deeply to this wild, untamed corner of Africa.

Day 5

489962-elephants-on-rubondo-island-lake-victoria.jpg

08.06

Serengeti- Rubondo Island

After days immersed in the golden savannahs and dramatic river crossings of the Serengeti, your journey takes a striking turn. You’ll board a light aircraft and watch as the vast plains fall away beneath you, replaced by glimmering waters and emerald-green islands scattered across the expanse of Lake Victoria. Your destination is Rubondo Island—a remote, forested sanctuary where time seems to slow and nature reigns undisturbed.

On landing at the island airstrip, you’ll be met by your guide from Asilia Rubondo Island Camp and transferred to the lodge. Tucked within ancient forest and overlooking the lake, the camp is a haven of tranquility, with just a handful of cottages hidden among the trees.

After settling in and enjoying a leisurely lunch, you’ll set out on your first gentle activity—perhaps a guided forest walk or a boat safari along the shoreline. Look out for the flashes of vibrant birdlife, the occasional sitatunga stepping quietly from the reeds, or hippos surfacing with a grunt.

As the afternoon light softens, return to camp for sundowners by the water’s edge, followed by dinner under a canopy of stars, with the soft sounds of the forest as your evening soundtrack.

Tomorrow, the deeper adventures begin—trekking into the forest in search of the island’s wild chimpanzees and discovering the hidden secrets of this remarkable sanctuary.

Day 6

Rubondo-Island-Chipanzee-Trekking.jpg

08.07

Rubondo Island- Chimpanzee Tracking

This morning begins with an early wake‑up call and the soft chorus of the forest greeting the day. After a hearty breakfast, you set out with expert guides and trackers into the dense emerald canopy of Rubondo Island.

The trek itself is part of the adventure—following narrow trails woven through towering figs and mahoganies, pausing to listen for distant calls or the rustle of leaves that signal movement ahead. Your guides read the forest with practiced eyes, noting knuckle prints in the soft earth, freshly nibbled fruit, or broken branches that hint at the chimps’ path.

When you finally encounter them, the world seems to fall silent. You might glimpse a mother cradling her young, juveniles tumbling playfully through the vines, or a dominant male perched high, watching with calm authority. Time slows as you observe their remarkably human gestures, their expressive eyes, their complex social interactions.

It is a rare and humbling experience—to be a guest in their world, to witness their lives unfolding in the wild. As you make your way back to camp, the forest feels alive in a new way, and you carry with you the quiet magic of having met one of our closest relatives in their own untamed home.

08.08

Rubondo Island - L. Manyara region

After breakfast and a leisurely morning soaking up the last moments on Rubondo, you’ll board the only afternoon flight off the island at 15:15. As your aircraft lifts over the expanse of Lake Victoria, the island’s lush canopy fades into memory, giving way to the mosaic of plains, lakes, and escarpments that define northern Tanzania.

After approximately two hours in the air, you’ll touch down at Lake Manyara Airstrip, gateway to one of the most scenic regions in the Great Rift Valley. The landscape here shifts from groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to open plains where giraffes, elephants, and antelope roam beneath the towering escarpment.

Your guide will meet you at the airstrip for a scenic 1.5-2 hour drive to Little Chem Chem, a private concession nestled between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park. This peaceful sanctuary offers a more intimate experience of the wild — elephants wandering through the fever trees, lions calling at dusk, and sunsets that set the baobabs aglow.

Spend the evening surrounded by the stillness of the bush. Enjoy sundowners by the fire, dine beneath a canopy of stars, and fall asleep to the sounds of the wilderness — the perfect prelude to tomorrow’s exploration of the Lake Manyara–Tarangire ecosystem.

Return to camp for lunch and time to relax — perhaps by the pool or on your veranda watching wildlife drift past.

In the afternoon, head out again for a sundowner drive or an optional visit to a local Maasai community. As the sun sets over Lake Burunge, enjoy a drink in hand while the Rift Valley escarpment glows in the evening light.
